What do you do when a colleague asks you if you want to go to your other colleague’s gig later on that day? Of course, you say yes, because you love music, want to socialise with your co-workers, and can’t say no to a gig for £2. It’s also a plus that the venue is only a 15-minute trip from work.

We go in, and I instantly get recognised by someone I used to see regularly at open mics I used to attend around 5 years ago in Islington. It’s even weirder because the last time I was at The Water Rats was 6 years ago, to see my ex’s band at the time, Direvargs. Anyhow, it was interesting to catch up, and I felt quite guilty for recognising the guy, but not remembering his name.

There was a free face painting table and even though I was hesitant at first, I decided to get clown make up done. Because why not? It’s October, the month of Halloween and dress up! I’m not surprised why my other colleague, who turned up on their own, didn’t recognise me later on.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the band as I’ve never heard their music before, but they turned out to be great, and I was really impressed by my colleague’s drumming. This was some kind of Japanese event, it seemed, as the members of this and other bands spoke to the audience in Japanese. I didn’t understand a thing unfortunately but it didn’t stop me from having a good time.
